Most people who can use a level and a tape measure, check the alignment of a fence line, and are willing to dedicate the time to do the job correctly, can likely install our ranch fence. However, it is crucial that the work is done properly, as this is a fence designed to last a lifetime, and any mistakes will be visible for a very long time. Therefore, it’s worth knowing how to do it, whether you’re installing the fence yourself or someone else is doing it for you.
Specifics of Vinyl Fence Installation

Before Installing a Vinyl Fence:
- Check if a permit is required in your area.
- Consult local utility services to locate underground networks.
- Verify the boundaries of your property.
- Read the following instructions.
Horse Fence Gate Installation
- Horse Fence Installation – Posts and Rails – PDF
- Horse Fence Installation – Posts and Rails with CertaGrain® Texture – PDF
Required Tools:
- 30-meter measuring tape
- Post level (for vertical alignment in two planes)
- Nylon string and wooden or steel stakes
- Hammer and saw (preferably with a plywood blade)
- Spray paint for marking digging spots (silver or fluorescent)
- Manual post hole digger and 30 cm electric auger
- Special rail notching tool (for Heritage fences only)
- Clear PVC adhesive (or silicone sealant) for attaching post caps
Fence Components:
- Post Sizes:
- 2 rails: 12.7 x 12.7 x 1.73 m
- 3 rails: 12.7 x 12.7 x 2.13 m
- 4 rails: 12.7 x 12.7 x 2.44 m
- Post Spacing: 2.44 m
- Rail Size:
- 3.8 x 14 x 4.88 m
- 5.08 x 15.24 x 4.88 m
- Height for 3 and 4 rails: 1.37-1.52 m above ground
Hilly or Sloped Terrain:
If installing on uphill or downhill terrain, rails can be divided into 2.44 m sections to accommodate changes in elevation. In extreme situations, it may be necessary to adjust post holes. As a general rule, the smoother the transitions, the better the appearance.
Work Layout:
- Draw a layout diagram of the fence and calculate the number of corner, end, and “T” posts needed.
- Determine the fence line using string and stakes, keeping 6.35 cm from the string to the center of the post.
Post Installation:
- Drill holes 76 cm deep and clean them with a manual digger.
- Place posts in the holes and pour 36 kg of pre-mixed concrete into each hole.
Rail Installation:
- For 3 rails, divide them into 2.44 m sections and create a "weave."
Gate Installation:
- Insert two reinforcements into each gate post and fill with concrete. Wait 24-48 hours before hanging the gate.
